Cameroon is in the process of implementing far-sighted forest legislation. The problem is compliance. Laws look great on the books, but it is business as usual on the ground. Through Global Forest Watch, we will help put teeth into these laws.
As this graph shows, in two key provinces, we found that even where companies and others are cited for breaking the rules, most cases never made it to court. One in five of the government dossiers we acquired had “stopped at the influence of a higher authority” — written on them.
