Susanne Bergstrand, Environment Manager, IKEA International
For the last ten years IKEA has been working with environmental issues in a more aware way. Today we have five prioritised environmental issues, covering the whole chain from product development, purchase, and distribution to meeting the customer. One of the five prioritized issues is sustainable forestry.
We know that almost four fifths of the world’s original forest cover is gone, and much of it has been lost within the past three decades. Today, major parts of the earth’s remaining intact natural forests are under threat due to logging, agricultural clearing and mining.
As we are so dependent on wood and wood fibres, sustainable forestry is important for IKEA. We need the forests as a raw material source, but moreover we have, as the world’s largest home furnishings company, a responsibility to secure the natural resources also for future generations.
