Global Forest Watch PowerPoint Slide #17: Largest Landowners in Canada
In Canada, over 90 percent of forests are publicly owned. However, much of this area is managed by a handful of companies.
This map illustrates that 13 companies (now 12 following an early 2000 merger of Abitibi-Consolidated, Inc. and Donahoe, Inc.) manage close to half of Canada’s forests. Their operating areas are huge, each at least the size of Switzerland. As such, they are in a powerful position to promote better forest management on the ground.
