Global Forest Watch PowerPoint slide #21: Canada’s Tenure and Forest Productivity
This is the other big untold forest story Global Forest Watch has unveiled: the world’s northernmost forests are being opened up for large-scale exploitation.
This map shows logging leases as compared to forest productivity. Areas in red have significant ecological limitations to logging, or are considered unsuitable for forestry.
As you can see, logging leases now extend into far-northern areas, home to Canada’s most fragile, and slow-growing forests
Canada maintains its lead as the world’s biggest exporter of timber, by continuing to harvest 90 percent of its wood in primary and old-growth forests. Global Forest Watch has documented that under current practices, this is not sustainable. We leave an unfortunate legac y for future generations.
