Global Forest Watch PowerPoint Slide #28: Canada First NationsTreaties and Settlements
This map highlights another compliance issue. Vast areas of Canada are under treaty negotiations with Aboriginals and Métis groups.
Here is a map showing current forest cover in Canada in green and water bodies in blue. The areas in orange indicate the location of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit communities.
Most of forests continue to be managed by governments and private companies, with little involvement by indigenous people, as required by government policies.
In Canada, Global Forest Watch is collecting data to identify where companies have taken indigenous interests into account, and where they have not.
Global Forest Watch is not just about the environment it is also about people.
