Amazon Deforestation Remains High
Notes:
Annual Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, 1988-96
In the Brazilian Amazon, the annual deforestation rate declined from a peak of more than 20,000 square kilometers in 1988 to just over 11,000 square kilometers in 1991. However, data from the Brazilian Government show that it rebounded to more than 29,000 square kilometers in 1995 before declining to 18,100 square kilometers in 1996.
